St. Joseph Walthill Church Dedication History
News Article taken from “The True Voice” Friday, June 13, 1919
WALTHILL , NEBRASKA
On Tuesday morning, June 3rd, (1919) at 10 a.m., Archbishop Harty dedicated the new church of St. Joseph at Walthill before a large concourse of people. The Sacrament of Confirmation also was conferred on a class of forty-five, of whom twenty were adults. At the Solemn High Mass which followed the ceremony of dedication, the archbishop presided at the throne.
Rev. H. Griese of Winnebago was celebrant of the Mass, assisted by Father Gately of Lyons and Father Cooney of Omaha as deacon and subdeacon. Father Janse of Sioux City was master of ceremonies. Father Cooney delivered the sermon, which was an eloquent exposition of Catholic doctrine and showed a deep appreciation of the significance of the dedication ceremony. The archbishop in a few words congratulated the pastor, Father Cotter, and the people of Walthill on their achievement and remarked on the harmony that existed in the community. Before administering the Sacrament of Confirmation, His Grace addressed the candidates, explaining the meaning and significance of the great sacrament they were about to receive.
Altogether the day was one of great importance and one to be long remembered by the people of Walthill. It was the first occasion on which the parish had been visited by a Bishop or Archbishop. The new church was prettily decorated for the occasion by the ladies of the parish, to whom great merit is due, also for their painstaking preparations for the banquet which was served the Archbishop and visiting priests in the parochial residence after the ceremonies. On account of inclement weather many who deterred from being present. The archbishop left Walthill on Tuesday evening to dedicate the splendid new church at Randolph.
The priests present were:
Rev. H. Griese of Winnebago
Rev. H. Gately of Lyons.
Rev. P. Cooney of Omaha.
Rev. T. O. Sullivan of Tilden.
